Pantropical distribution of short-rotation woody plantations: spatial probabilities under current and future climate

چکیده

Abstract Short-rotation woody plantations (SRWPs) play a major role in climate change mitigation and adaptation plans, because of their high yields biomass fast carbon storage. However, benefits, trade-offs growing-success are heavily location-dependent. Therefore, spatial data on the distribution SRWPs indispensable for assessing current distribution, with other uses potential contributions to mitigation. As global datasets lack reliable information full mapping is difficult, we provide consistent systematic approach estimate (sub-)tropical biomes under future climate. We combined three advanced methods (maximum entropy, random forest multinomial regression) evaluate spatially explicit probabilities SRWPs. inputs served large empirical dataset SRWP observations 17 predictor variables, covering biophysical socio-economic conditions. varied strongly between regions, might not be feasible parts biomes, challenging feasibility plans that over-rely tree plantations. Due climatic changes, decreased many areas, particularly pronounced higher emission scenarios. This indicates negative feedback emissions resulting less potential. Less suitable land could also result fewer wood resources from these plantations, enhancing pressure natural forests hampering sustainability initiatives use wood-based alternatives. Our results can help adding more nuanced treatment options management research biodiversity change.

Modeling Current and Future Potential Distributions of Caspian Pond Turtle (Mauremys caspica) under Climate Change Scenarios

Although turtles are the most threatened taxonomic group within the reptile class, we have a very limited understanding of how turtles respond to climate change. Here, we evaluated the effects of climate changes on the geographical distribution of Caspian pond turtle (Mauremys caspica). We used an ensemble approach by combining six species distribution models including artificial neural network...

Short Rotation Woody Crops for Industrial Applications

Purpose-grown trees have the potential to be a significant portion of the bioenergy solution in the Southeastern United States. Trees are a biomass source with existing end-use markets and associated infrastructure and provide a “living inventory” with a variety of benefits over annually harvested energy crops. The economic feasibility of utilizing tree woody biomass is improved by increasing p...

Modeling the current and future suitable habitat distribution of Fritillaria imperialis under climate change scenarios and using three general circulation model in Iran

Climate change may pose challenges to the conservation of plant species such as the Fritillaria imperialis that have narrow geographical distribution. In this study, the modeling suitable habitats of F.imperialis in Iran was done in the current condition and under climate change (2050). For this purpose, 78 species presence data along with 12 environmental variables including bioclimatic, physi...

Short rotation plantations policy history in Europe: lessons from the past and recommendations for the future

Short rotation plantations (SRPs) are fast-growing trees (such as willow (Salix spp.), poplar (Populus spp.) and Eucalyptus) grown closely together and harvested in periods of 2-20 years. There are around 50,000 hectares of SRPs in Europe, a relatively small area considering that there have been supportive policy measures in many countries for 30 years. This paper looks at the effect that the p...

Nitrogen supply and demand in short-rotation sweetgum plantations

Intensive management is crucial for optimizing hardwood plantation success, and nitrogen (N) nutrition management is one of the most important practices in intensive management. Because management of short-rotation woody crop plantations is a mixture of row-crop agriculture and plantation forestry, we tested the usefulness of an agronomic budget modified for deciduous perennial trees for estima...
